    Get PDF
This research investigates an approach rooted in nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems principles for personalized prognostics of cardiorespiratory disorders in the emerging point-of-care (POC) treatment contexts. Such an approach necessitates new methods for (a) quantitative and personalized modeling of underlying cardiovascular system dynamics to serve as a virtual instrument to derive surrogate (hemodynamic) signals, (b) high-specificity diagnostics to identify and localize disorders, (c) real-time prediction to provide forecasts of impending disorder episodes, and (d) personalized prognosis of the short-term variations of the risk, necessary for effective treatment decisions, based on estimating the distribution of the times remaining till the onset of an anomaly episode. The specific contributions of the dissertation work are as follows: 1. Quantitative modeling for real-time synthesis of hemodynamic signals. Features extracted from ECG signals were used to construct atrioventricular excitation inputs to a nonlinear deterministic lumped parameter model of cardiovascular system dynamics. The model-derived hemodynamic signals, personalized to an individual's physiological and anatomical conditions, would lead to cost-effective virtual medical instruments necessary for personalized POC prognostics. 2. Random graph representation of the complex cardiac dynamics for disorder diagnostics. The quantifiers of a random walk on a network reconstructed from vectorcardiogram (VCG) were investigated for the detection and localization of cardiovascular disorders. Extensive tests with signals from PTB database of PhysioNet databank suggest that locations of myocardial infarction can be determined accurately (sensitivity of ~88% and specificity of ~92%) from tracking certain consistently estimated invariants of this random walk representation. 3. Nonparametric prediction modeling of disorder episodes. A Dirichlet process based mixture Gaussian process was utilized to track and forecast the evolution of the complex nonlinear and nonstationary cardiorespiratory dynamics underlying of the measured signal features and health states. Extensive sleep tests suggest that the method can predict an impending sleep apnea episode to accuracies (R^2) of 83% and 77% for 1 step and 3 step-ahead predictions, respectively.4. Color-coded random graph representation of the state space for personalized prognostic modeling. The prognostic model used the stochastic evolution of the transition pathways from a normal state to an anomalous state in the color-coded state space network to estimate the distribution of the remaining useful life. The prognostic model was validated using the data from ECG Apnea Database (Physionet.org). The model can predict the estimated time till a disorder (apnea episode) onset to within 15% of the observed times 1-45 min ahead of their inception.Industrial Engineering & Managemen

Opportunistic secure transmission for wireless relay networks with modify-and-forward protocol

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the security at the physical layer in cooperative wireless networks (CWNs) where the data transmission between nodes can be realised via either direct transmission (DT) or relaying transmission (RT) schemes. Inspired by the concept of physical-layer network coding (PNC), a secure PNC-based modify-and-forward (SPMF) is developed to cope with the imperfect shared knowledge of the message modification between relay and destination in the conventional modify-and-forward (MF). In this paper, we first derive the secrecy outage probability (SOP) of the SPMF scheme, which is shown to be a general expression for deriving the SOP of any MF schemes. By comparing the SOPs of various schemes, the usage of the relay is shown to be not always necessary and even causes a poorer performance depending on target secrecy rate and quality of channel links. To this extent, we then propose an opportunistic secure transmission protocol to minimise the SOP of the CWNs. In particular, an optimisation problem is developed in which secrecy rate thresholds (SRTs) are determined to find an optimal scheme among various DT and RT schemes for achieving the lowest SOP. Furthermore, the conditions for the existence of SRTs are derived with respect to various channel conditions to determine if the relay could be relied on in practice

On the Total Energy Efficiency of Cell-Free Massive MIMO

    Get PDF
We consider the cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink, where a very large number of distributed multiple-antenna access points (APs) serve many single-antenna users in the same time-frequency resource. A simple (distributed) conjugate beamforming scheme is applied at each AP via the use of local channel state information (CSI). This CSI is acquired through time-division duplex operation and the reception of uplink training signals transmitted by the users. We derive a closed-form expression for the spectral efficiency taking into account the effects of channel estimation errors and power control. This closed-form result enables us to analyze the effects of backhaul power consumption, the number of APs, and the number of antennas per AP on the total energy efficiency, as well as, to design an optimal power allocation algorithm. The optimal power allocation algorithm aims at maximizing the total energy efficiency, subject to a per-user spectral efficiency constraint and a per-AP power constraint. Compared with the equal power control, our proposed power allocation scheme can double the total energy efficiency. Furthermore, we propose AP selections schemes, in which each user chooses a subset of APs, to reduce the power consumption caused by the backhaul links. With our proposed AP selection schemes, the total energy efficiency increases significantly, especially for large numbers of APs. Moreover, under a requirement of good quality-of-service for all users, cell-free massive MIMO outperforms the colocated counterpart in terms of energy efficiency

ABSTRACTThe optimal shape of a Pfluger column is determined  by using Pontryagin’s maximum principle (PMP). The governing equation of the problem is reduced to a boundary-value problem for a single second order nonlinear differential equation. The results of the analysis problem are obtained by Spectral method. Necessary conditions for the maximum value of the first eigenvalue corresponding to given column volume areestablished to determine the optimal distribution of cross-sectional area along the column axis. Keywords: optimal shape; Pontryagin’s maximum principle

    Get PDF
In the context of today’s globalization, Vietnamese enterprises, especially small and medium ones (SMEs), have to face with many challenges and have to innovate for survival and development. The global integration process also means that local enterprises have to compete with foreign enterprises with advanced knowledge and modern management skills. Therefore, in order to ensure sustainable development, local enterprises should be ready with knowledge management (KM) practices in order to achieve high efficiency and strong competitive advantages. This research is to explore the impact factors on the innovation performance of SMEs in Lam Dong province. Based on the previous model of Berraies et al. (2014), some factors of KM processes impacting on the innovation performance of Vietnamese SMEs are explored and evaluated. Measurement scales are inherited selectively to suit the context of this research. The analysis results of this study showed that the innovation performance of SMEs was affected by the knowledge creation process. This result pointed out the knowledge creation process was affected by some KM enabling factors, such as trust, collaboration, learning, reward, decentralization, formalization, IT support and T-shaped skills. From this result, some recommendations for improving the innovation performance of Vietnamese SMEs by KM approach are also suggested

Mentha aquatica Linn. var. crispa is commonly used as a spice in many Asian countries. Although its biological activities, such as its applications, antimicrobial properties, have been studied, its antioxidation properties have not been investigated. This study establishes the most suitable extraction conditions concerning the independent variables affecting the total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AA) of M. aquatica extract (stem and leaf). Investigated factors include the type of solvent used; solvent concentration, the ratio of raw material to solvent, extraction time and extraction temperature. The efficiency of polyphenol extraction was evaluated by TPC and AA through the ability to neutralize the free radicals 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2\u27-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) was used as the evaluation indicator. The results have shown that acetone at a concentration of 50%, at a ratio of 1:20 (w/v), extraction time of 2 h and a temperature of 40 °C give the highest values of TPC and AA, with values of 120.92 mg GAE g-1 dw for TPC, 169.36 μmol TE g-1 dw by DPPH assay, 264.03 μmol by ABTS assay, and 425.35 μmol Fe2+ g-1 dw by FRAP assay. This study demonstrates that extracts of M. aquatica can be used for research as food antioxidant
